Volcanic Cloud to equal Islamic Closure of Silk Road?

The Golden Age of Discovery from 1492 for the next hundred years saw European adventurers discovering sea routes to Cuba, the Americas, the head waters of the Mississippi, the Amazon,  the Pacific, the East Indies, Southern Africa, East Africa, and the Northwest Passage.

What brought it on?

A big volcanic cloud called the closure of the Silk Road at Istanbul changed the world forever. When the great Islamic Caliphate flexed its muscle against Western Europe and conquered Constantinople in the 14th Century, no-one had any idea how far the effects would reach.

European traders and markets lost camel and mule access to their Indian and Chinese trading partners for carpets, silks, saffron and all kinds of other spices, arts, treasures, finely handcrafted tools, weapons, and jewellery. The world stopped. The merchants drove royalty to find other ways to access their goods.

So what would happen if Iceland continued to belch anti-air-travel fumes for 100 years?

Someone, somehow would invent another way to bring the world to Europe faster than conventional planes.

What about that?
