Exactly 90 years ago today in a sudden dash in the heat of battle, 800 Australian light horse charged Turkish lines around Jerusalem and seized the Wells of Beersheba. It has been called the last great successful cavalry charge in history even though the soldiers were actually infantrymen on horses.
It ended the Ottoman Empire's hold on Jerusalem and sounded the death knell for the great Ottoman Caliphate. Mustafa Kemal officially abolished the last Caliphate, the Ottoman Empire, and founded the Republic of Turkey, in 1924.
